Anti-Air and Air-Defense Tactics

Anti-air (AA) fire is the second-most lethal threat in Hostile Skies after jets. Every ground-attack mission, every event with a ground phase, and every map with a control point spawns AA. This page explains how AA works, how to dodge it, and how to fly ground-attack runs efficiently.

How anti-air works

AA guns are static emplacements placed at control points, around carrier islands, and along capture-zone perimeters. Each emplacement has:

  • A 360-degree fire arc
  • A lead-prediction cone that widens at distance
  • A 3-second cooldown between bursts
  • A damage-per-hit that scales with the plane’s altitude (lower = more damage)

A typical 12-minute match contains 8 to 14 AA emplacements on each side. The matchmaker spawns them at random control points so ground-attack pilots need to read the map each round.

Damage zones

AA damage scales with altitude and angle:

  • High altitude (1,000m+): lowest damage, easy to dodge.
  • Mid altitude (500–1,000m): standard damage, medium dodge difficulty.
  • Low altitude (under 500m): highest damage, hard to dodge.

A low-altitude run on a defended control point deals 25% of your HP per AA hit. Two hits and you are in emergency-bailout territory.

Lead prediction

AA has a 1-second lead prediction cone. At 600m the cone is narrow; at 1,200m it is wide enough to dodge with a side slip. The cone resets every burst, so timing a side-slip to a burst is the cleanest evasion.

The three most common evasion patterns:

  1. Side-slip dodge — quick 30° roll to one side, then back. Works at mid to high altitude. Costs no energy if you are above 350 km/h.
  2. S-turn weave — alternating left and right rolls in a 4-second cycle. Works at any altitude. Costs ~5 km/h per cycle.
  3. Spiral descent — pulling into a 30° bank and rolling the nose as you descend. Works best at low altitude and high speed. Costs the most energy but is the safest pattern if you are deep in a control point.

Ground-attack strategy

A ground-attack run has four phases:

  1. Approach — fly at 600m altitude, parallel to the control point. This puts you above most of the lead-prediction cone.
  2. Run-in — dive to 300m, line up on a target. Use the same approach angle every run so you learn the AA timing.
  3. Bomb release — drop bombs at 200m altitude, pull up at 30°. Don’t ride the bombs into the ground.
  4. Exit — climb back to 600m, side-slip to dodge the trailing AA burst.

Practice this pattern on the carrier map. The carrier map AA is the most predictable in the game and is the best training ground for ground-attack runs.

When to abort a run

Abort the run if:

  • You are below 50% HP.
  • Three or more AA emplacements are firing at you.
  • A jet appears on radar near the control point.

Aborting is faster than fighting through. A clean abort saves your plane and your XP run.

Counter-AA tactics

If your squad is being pinned by AA:

  • Bomb the AA emplacements first. AA is a destructible target.
  • Send two bombers to the control point so AA has to split its fire.
  • Bring an escort fighter to clear jets while your bombers run.

The v3.7 carrier rework added two new capture zones over the reef. The reef zones are AA-defended and have hidden AA emplacements. Bring at least two bombers per squad for the reef zones.

Best planes for ground attack

The best ground-attack planes are bombers and multi-roles:

  • Mosquito Mk VI — fast bomber with the best bomb load.
  • B-25 Mitchell — heavy bomber with the largest splash damage.
  • P-38 Lightning — multi-role with rockets, good for solo ground runs.
  • Ho 229 — multi-role with bombs and rockets, the Axis counterpart to the P-38.
