Team Strategy

Team strategy wins matches in Hostile Skies. This page covers the three core squad roles, the standard callouts, and the formations used by competitive teams.

Squad roles

  1. Point — flies ahead, draws fire, makes first contact.
  2. Wingman — stays 1,000 m behind the point, covers the six.
  3. Anchor — flies 2,000 m back, manages the rear and bombers.

A standard 3-pilot squad assigns these three roles. A 4-pilot squad adds a Spotter who calls targets from altitude.

Callouts

  • Bandit — enemy contact.
  • Spike — missile lock.
  • Engage — commit to the dogfight.
  • Disengage — reset to altitude.
  • On your six — enemy behind you.
  • Joker — low fuel or ammo.
  • Bingo — emergency state.

Standard callouts work in voice chat and in-game text. Keep them short.

When to break formation

Break formation when:

  • The point dies — wingman becomes the point.
  • The anchor spots a bomber — the squad peels off to intercept.
  • The enemy team pushes a 4v1 — scatter to reset the spawn timer.
  • The point calls “engaged” — wingman and anchor move to cover.

How to call targets

A good callout is short and directional. “Bandit, 3 o’clock high, 600 m” tells your team exactly where to look. Long sentences lose fights.

When to switch roles mid-fight

If the wingman gets a clean shot on the point’s target, swap roles on the fly. The original point becomes the wingman. This keeps the squad flexible.

Voice discipline

Keep voice chat short. Call targets, not commentary. Pilots who narrate their every move slow the squad down.

Pair this with the Loadout tier list

Mix squad roles with complementary loadouts. The classic trio is one energy fighter, one turn fighter, and one bomber.

How to recover from a bad start

If the squad loses a member in the first 30 seconds, fall back to the base and regroup. Do not feed the enemy by chasing revenge kills.

What the best squads do

  • They use a single comms channel.
  • They queue as a 3-stack.
  • They share XP-boost codes from the Active codes page.

Pair this page with the How to protect your base guide for defence plays.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to the most common questions.

What is the best squad size?

3 pilots is the sweet spot. 4 pilots is great for events; anything bigger is harder to coordinate.

Should I fly solo or in a squad?

Squad play is consistently better for both credits and XP. Solo play is for practice.
