Hostile Skies P-51 Mustang Guide
The Allied Tier 4 prop workhorse: unlock, upgrade, and dogfight.
The P-51 Mustang is the Allied Tier 4 prop fighter that every Allied pilot flies on the climb into jets. It is the first Allied prop that holds energy against the FW 190 D-13 in a vertical fight, and it remains the most-played Allied prop in mixed lobbies three patches after it landed. This guide covers how to unlock the Mustang, the upgrade order that maximises its dogfighting potential, and the tactics that let it beat a BF 109 in a turning fight.
What the P-51 Mustang is good at
The Mustang is a balanced prop fighter. It turns well for an Allied plane, accelerates cleanly out of a dive, and carries the .50 cal loadout that lets you delete a low-tier bomber in a single burst. Compared to the F4U Corsair and the P-47 Thunderbolt, the Mustang sits in the middle on every stat: not the best turner, not the fastest diver, not the tankiest airframe, but competitive on every axis at once.
The trade-off is that the Mustang does not dominate any single stat. A FW 190 D-13 out-turns it below 400 km/h. A BF 109 climbs better than it above 3,000 m. A P-47 Thunderbolt soaks more damage per pass. What the Mustang gives you in return is consistency: it wins extended fights because it does not have a hard weakness.
If you want a quick reference, the Plane tier list puts the Mustang in S-tier for Allied props in v3.5.1, behind only the Gloster Meteor and the M22 on the Allied side. The Axis vs Allied page explains where the Mustang fits in the Allied roster.
How to unlock the P-51 Mustang
The Mustang unlocks at level 25 for 80,000 credits. It is the first major Allied credit sink and the plane most pilots main from level 25 to level 35 while they save for the Gloster Meteor.
The fastest unlock path is:
- Stay on the P-40 Warhawk or the F4U Corsair through level 24. Both planes earn credits faster than the starter props because they survive longer in mixed lobbies.
- Run the How to earn gold fast farming routes from level 20 onward so you have the 80,000 credits banked before you hit level 25.
- Redeem every active code on the Active codes page the day you hit level 25. The credit boosts stack with your saved credits.
- Buy the Mustang the second it unlocks. The cost does not decrease over time, but the credit boosts only stack on the day of purchase.
If you are below level 20, see the How to unlock planes page for the full Allied ladder. The Best starter plane guide covers the props you fly before the Mustang.
Upgrade order for the Mustang
The Mustang has four upgrade slots: engine, guns, airframe, and wings. The optimal order maximises the Mustang’s strengths and patches its one weak spot:
- Engine — the Mustang lives on its acceleration. Max engine first so you can reset between engagements faster than any Axis prop.
- Guns — the default .50 cals are accurate but underpowered for late-game bombers. Max guns second so your bursts actually delete bombers and turn fighters in one pass.
- Airframe — extra HP lets you survive the long turning fights you take against the FW 190 D-13 and the BF 109.
- Wings — wings improve the roll rate but the Mustang already rolls well. Skip wings until you have the rest of the plane maxed and only then max wings as a vanity upgrade.
Each upgrade costs between 15,000 and 30,000 credits. Plan on saving an extra 90,000 credits on top of the unlock cost if you want to fly the Mustang fully maxed.
How to fly the Mustang
The Mustang rewards a balanced fighting style. You can boom-and-zoom like the Gloster Meteor, but you can also turn with Axis turn fighters below 350 km/h. The trick is to know which style to use against which target. The How to fly guide covers the basic flight model; the Turn vs energy fighting page explains when each style wins.
The standard Mustang engagement loop is:
- Find a target that is flying level or turning gently in front of you.
- Close to within 400 m, roll to bring your guns onto the target, and fire a single 1-second burst.
- If the target does not bleed energy, extend up and re-engage with a boom-and-zoom pass.
- If the target turns into you, match the turn below 350 km/h and force a turning fight. The Mustang wins every turning fight below 350 km/h against a BF 109 and a FW 190 A-8.
- Repeat the pass until the target is dead or the fight has separated.
The most common Mustang mistake is fighting at the wrong altitude. The Mustang loses every fight above 4,000 m because its climb rate falls off. Stay between 1,500 m and 3,500 m and the Mustang wins consistently.
How to fight a BF 109
The BF 109 is the Axis Tier 4 turn fighter that mirrors the Mustang across factions. In pure turn fights the BF 109 slightly edges the Mustang, but only at the corner speed of 380 km/h. Below 350 km/h the Mustang matches or beats the BF 109 in a turn. Above 420 km/h the BF 109 bleeds energy and the Mustang walks away.
The way to beat a BF 109 in a Mustang is to drag the fight below 350 km/h in a vertical turning fight, then climb out and re-engage. Do not try to turn with a BF 109 at its corner speed. You will lose. Force the fight below the BF 109’s corner speed and you will win every time.
For target-priority rules against Axis apex pilots, pair this with the How to shoot down bosses page — a skilled BF 109 pilot is essentially a flying boss and you treat them the same way.
How to fight a FW 190 D-13
The FW 190 D-13 is the Axis Tier 4 boom-and-zoom fighter that mirrors the Mustang across factions. In a pure energy fight the FW 190 D-13 slightly out-climbs the Mustang and holds energy in a dive. In a pure turn fight the Mustang out-turns the FW 190 D-13 below 400 km/h.
The way to beat a FW 190 D-13 in a Mustang is to extend away from the opening pass, force the FW 190 D-13 to dive and bleed energy, then turn into them below 350 km/h. The FW 190 D-13 cannot follow you into a low-speed turn and you will win every time.
If the FW 190 D-13 sets the engagement altitude above 4,000 m, disengage and reset below 3,000 m. The Mustang is a mid-altitude fighter and loses every fight at high altitude.
Best events to farm in the Mustang
The Mustang is the best Allied credit farmer among props for two reasons. First, it kills bots faster than any starter prop because of its gun upgrade potential. Second, it survives long enough to reach the bonus-tier kill thresholds.
The best event rotation for the Mustang is:
- Bomber Run — the Mustang’s .50 cals can one-clip a bomber if your guns are maxed. Pair with the upgraded airframe so you survive the flak.
- King of the Hill — the Mustang’s turn rate lets you reset between waves faster than any other Allied prop.
- Phantom Pursuit — the Mustang is not the optimal pick here, but it is a viable second pick if you have not unlocked the Gloster Meteor yet.
For the full event rotation, see the Event schedule page. The Active codes page lists the credit-boost codes that stack with event payouts.
When to switch off the Mustang
Switch off the Mustang the moment you unlock the Gloster Meteor. The Gloster Meteor is the first Allied jet and dominates every prop role. If you play dogfight, the Gloster Meteor out-accelerates you. If you play bomber-hunter, the Gloster Meteor out-runs you above 450 km/h.
The Mustang remains the best Allied prop and the safest Allied plane for new pilots who have not yet reached the jets. Keep it upgraded as your backup until you have the Gloster Meteor maxed.
For the full unlock ladder, see the How to unlock planes guide. For the Gloster Meteor upgrade path that comes after, see the Gloster Meteor Guide. For which prop to switch to once you have credits, see the Plane tier list.
Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers to the most common questions.
Is the P-51 Mustang still good in v3.5.1?
Yes. It is S-tier for Allied props in v3.5.1, behind only the Gloster Meteor and the M22. The Mustang is the best balanced prop on the Allied side and wins extended fights against every Axis prop.
Should I max the Mustang before buying the Gloster Meteor?
Engine and guns yes, airframe nice-to-have, wings no. Max engine first, then guns, then save the remaining 90,000 credits for the Gloster Meteor unlock at level 35.
What is the best Allied prop to fight a BF 109 with?
The P-51 Mustang, flown in vertical turning fights below 350 km/h where the BF 109's corner-speed advantage falls off. Above 380 km/h the BF 109 slightly out-turns the Mustang.
