Hostile Skies How to Fly
Throttle, pitch, roll, energy fighting.
Hostile Skies runs a simplified WW2 flight model. It rewards energy fighting, punishes tight turns, and forgives reasonable mistakes. This guide walks through every control that matters, the energy-fight basics, and the three mistakes every beginner makes.
The control layout
The default controls are listed below. Open the settings menu before your first match and confirm the bindings. Remap anything that clashes with your keyboard.

The two non-obvious bindings are flaps and trim. Flaps deploy in three modes - off, partial, full - and each mode affects lift, drag, and turn rate differently. Trim is the small mouse-wheel adjustment that lets you release the stick on a long climb or dive without drifting.
Takeoff in six steps
- Wait on the runway until the pre-match timer hits zero.
- Push throttle to full (Shift).
- Tap flaps once for the partial mode (F).
- Pull back gently on the stick (S) to rotate.
- Keep the nose below 15 degrees of pitch until airspeed climbs above 120 km/h.
- Raise the landing gear (G) and trim the nose level (mouse wheel down).
The single most common mistake on takeoff is pulling the stick too hard. A 25-degree climb at 80 km/h bleeds speed. By the time you reach 150 m altitude, you have stalled and dropped back onto the runway. Keep the nose gentle and let the airspeed build.
Climb and cruise
The optimal climb speed is 220 km/h. Climb at 220 km/h until you reach 1,500 m, then level off and accelerate to your cruise speed. Cruise speed depends on the plane - props cruise around 350 km/h, jets cruise around 600 km/h.
Above 2,000 m, props start losing engine performance. The game does not enforce a hard ceiling, but the prop flight model degrades noticeably above 3,000 m. Most props operate best between 1,500 m and 2,500 m. Jets can comfortably operate above 5,000 m.
The three dogfight mistakes
Mistake 1: pulling too hard in turns
New pilots instinctively pull the stick all the way back when an enemy shows up on their six. That bleeds energy fast. By the time you have completed one turn, you are at 150 km/h and any enemy with a working engine can pick you off.
The fix is to roll first, then pull. Use A/D to roll the wings vertical, then pull back gently. A coordinated turn bleeds half as much energy as a hard pull.
Mistake 2: chasing low-health targets deep into enemy airspace
When you put a few rounds into an enemy and they turn red, the instinct is to chase. But a low-health enemy in your six is bait for his wingman. If the wingman is anywhere nearby, the chase ends with two reds instead of one.
The fix is to commit only when you are certain the wingman is dead or out of position. If you are unsure, disengage vertically. A split-S or a hammerhead gives you altitude and lets you re-enter the fight on your own terms.
Mistake 3: ignoring the radar
The radar is small, but it is the single best survival tool in the game. If a contact appears on your radar, you have about three seconds to decide what to do. New pilots who ignore the radar fly straight into enemies they never saw.
The fix is to glance at the radar every five seconds during a dogfight. A quick radar scan tells you whether the contact is friend or foe, and whether it is closing or opening.
Energy fighting versus turn fighting
Energy fighting is the dominant meta in Hostile Skies. The goal is to enter every engagement with more energy than the enemy, and to exit with energy to spare. The simplest energy-fight tactic is the boom-and-zoom: dive on an enemy, fire one burst, then zoom back up to altitude.
Turn fighting is the second meta. It works at low altitudes where you cannot zoom, and in props that turn faster than they climb. The classic Axis turn fighter is the FW 190 D-13; the classic Allied turn fighter is the P-51 Mustang. Both work, but turn fighting burns energy faster than energy fighting.
The third meta - jet duels - is mostly boom-and-zoom with longer ranges. Jets move so fast that close-in turn fights are usually suicide. Hold altitude, dive, fire one long burst, and zoom back up.
Landing in five steps
- Reduce throttle to idle (Ctrl).
- Extend full flaps (F twice).
- Lower landing gear (G).
- Pitch down to maintain 180 km/h on final.
- Cut throttle fully just before touchdown and flare gently (W).
Missing any of these steps usually results in a gear-up landing, which costs you HP and respawn time. If you cannot line up the runway in time, go around. A botched approach that you abort is always cheaper than a crashed landing.
How to recover from a stall
If your airspeed drops below 110 km/h in a prop or 250 km/h in a jet, you are stalling. The nose drops, the controls go soft, and you start falling.
The recovery is throttle first, then pitch. Push throttle to full (Shift), wait one second, then gently pull back on the stick. The throttle gives you the airspeed to recover; the stick restores the nose attitude.
