Hostile Skies Phantom Jet Guide
Axis apex jet: unlock path, boom-and-zoom tactics, counters.
The Phantom is the new Axis apex stealth jet added to Hostile Skies in v3.5.1. It has the highest top speed of any plane in the game, the strongest zoom-climb in the Axis lineup, and a unique stealth passive that breaks enemy radar tracking for two seconds after a hard maneuver. This guide covers how to unlock the Phantom, how to upgrade it, and how to fly it so it stays ahead of every Allied counter.
What the Phantom is good at
The Phantom is the textbook boom-and-zoom fighter. It accelerates to its top speed faster than any other Axis plane, holds energy in a dive better than any other Axis jet, and has a small radar cross-section that buys you two extra seconds to extend away after every pass.
The Phantom is not a turn fighter. Do not try to turn with a Spitfire Mk IX, a P-51 Mustang, or an M22 in a Phantom. The Phantom wins every engagement above 600 km/h and loses every engagement below 400 km/h. The whole art of flying the Phantom is choosing when to enter and exit the high-speed envelope.
If you are picking up the Phantom from another Axis plane, the Plane tier list confirms it sits in S-tier for v3.5.1. The Latest patch page covers the full v3.5.1 balance changes around the Phantom. The v3.6 roadmap explains why the Phantom will stay apex through the next patch.
How to unlock the Phantom
The Phantom unlocks at level 55 for 250,000 credits. It is the most expensive single plane in the game, so the credit grind leading up to the unlock matters as much as the unlock itself.
The fastest unlock path is:
- Run the How to earn gold fast routes from level 40 onward, every day. The 250k credit gate is the real bottleneck; the level 55 is usually hit before the credits are banked.
- Pick the Me 262 over the FW 190 D-13 as your bridge jet. The Me 262 out-zooms the FW 190 and lets you farm event credits with boom-and-zoom tactics that translate directly to the Phantom.
- Redeem every active code on the Active codes page the day you hit level 54. Some Phantom-credit codes expire on the same day as the v3.5.1 patch anniversary.
- Buy the Phantom the second you unlock it. The credit boosts only stack on the day of purchase.
For the full unlock ladder, see the How to unlock planes guide. The Getting started page covers day-one prep that compounds through the level 55 unlock.
Upgrade order for the Phantom
The Phantom has four upgrade slots and they behave differently from other jets:
- Engine — the Phantom is all about top speed and zoom-climb. Max engine first.
- Wings — on most jets wings are a vanity upgrade. On the Phantom wings boost the high-speed roll rate, which is the difference between a clean extension and a stalled turn. Max wings second.
- Guns — the default Phantom cannons have a high muzzle velocity that already beats the Gloster Meteor at range. Max guns third to round out the burst damage.
- Airframe — extra HP is a comfort upgrade on the Phantom because the stealth passive already keeps you out of return fire. Max airframe last.
Each upgrade costs between 28,000 and 50,000 credits. Plan on saving an extra 150,000 credits on top of the 250k unlock cost if you want to fly the Phantom fully maxed.
How to fly the Phantom
The Phantom rewards two things: speed selection and patience. The opening pass of a Phantom engagement is decided before you fire a shot — you pick the engagement altitude, you pick the engagement angle, you pick the engagement speed. The fight is over once you commit.
The standard Phantom engagement loop is:
- Climb to 3,500 m above the spawn area. The Phantom’s zoom-climb means you will arrive there from 1,500 m in under thirty seconds.
- Pick a target on the deck that is not looking up. Hard maneuvers make you harder to hit but they also mark you on the minimap.
- Roll inverted, pull the nose down to 60° below the horizon, and accelerate to merge speed.
- Fire a single burst between 500 and 700 m. The Phantom’s convergence is set for this window.
- Extend away in the dive. Do not pull up into a turn. The stealth passive buys you two seconds where enemy radar cannot track you — use those two seconds to build separation.
The most common Phantom mistake is staying in the fight after the burst. The Phantom does not have the gun count to win a sustained dogfight. The How to fly guide covers the underlying tactics; the Turn vs energy fighting page explains why extending away is the right call for boom-and-zoom planes.
How to fight the M22
The M22 (Allied apex jet added in v3.5.1) is the only Allied plane that consistently beats the Phantom. The M22 out-turns you up to 600 km/h and out-DPS you in a sustained burst. In a straight fight the Phantom wins on speed; in a turning fight the Phantom loses.
The way to beat an M22 in a Phantom is to drag the fight into a vertical high-speed scissors. The M22’s high-speed handling falls off above 700 km/h. If you can extend away, build speed above 700 km/h, and then re-engage from a different angle, the M22 cannot turn with you.
The opening merge matters more than the rest of the fight. If you bounce an M22 from above with energy, you have a real chance. If you let an M22 set the engagement altitude, the M22 wins. The How to shoot down bosses page covers target priority; the M22 is the Allied apex and you treat it like a flying boss.
Best events to farm in the Phantom
The Phantom is the best Axis credit farmer in the game. It kills bots faster than any other Axis plane, it survives long enough to reach the bonus-tier kill thresholds, and the stealth passive lets you reset between waves without taking damage.
The best event rotation for the Phantom is:
- Phantom Pursuit — the event is named after the plane and it is the single best Phantom event. Bring the Phantom and aim for the bonus-tier kill threshold of 12 kills.
- Bomber Run — the Phantom’s top speed lets you reach the bombers before any prop and one-clip them with the upgraded cannons.
- King of the Hill — the Phantom’s acceleration lets you reset between waves faster than any other Axis jet.
For the full event rotation, see the Event schedule page. The Active codes page lists the credit-boost codes that stack with event payouts.
When to switch off the Phantom
Do not. The Phantom is the Axis apex through at least the v3.6 patch window, and there is no Axis plane announced above it. The next credit sink is the v3.7 carrier rework, which is expected to add one new Axis plane — but no Phantom replacement has been confirmed.
If you are running low on credits after the 250k unlock, see the How to earn gold fast page for the post-Phantom farming routes.
Common Phantom mistakes
Three mistakes account for most Phantom deaths:
- Pulling up after the burst — as soon as you pull up you bleed all your speed and any Allied turn fighter on your six will eat you. Extend away in the dive.
- Fighting below 1,500 m — the Phantom loses its high-speed advantage in the deck. Stay above 2,000 m unless you are finishing a kill.
- Ignoring the stealth passive timer — the stealth passive breaks radar for two seconds. If you keep maneuvering past that window, you light up on the minimap again and the next Allied plane will have a firing solution.
For the broader set of dogfighting tactics, see the How to fly guide and the Turn vs energy fighting page.
Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers to the most common questions.
Is the Phantom the best Axis jet in v3.5.1?
Yes, by a clear margin. The Phantom is the only Axis plane that out-runs every Allied pick and has the unique stealth passive that buys you two seconds after a hard maneuver.
Should I max the Phantom before buying the next plane?
Yes. The Phantom is the apex through at least v3.6 and the credit sink for the v3.7 carrier rework is months away. Max the Phantom as the priority.
What is the best Allied counter to the Phantom?
The M22 if you have it unlocked. The M22 out-turns the Phantom below 600 km/h and out-DPS it in a sustained burst. The Gloster Meteor is the second-best counter and is safer for new pilots.
