Hostile Skies ME 262 Guide
The first Axis jet: unlock, upgrade, and boom-and-zoom.
The Messerschmitt ME 262 is the first jet you can unlock on the Axis side in Hostile Skies. It arrived in v3.4 and it has been the dominant Axis jet in every lobby since. It pairs against the Allied Gloster Meteor and wins the long game if you fly it correctly. This guide covers what it is, how to unlock it, what to upgrade first, and how to fly it so it stays effective through the late game.
What the ME 262 is good at
The ME 262 is a pure boom-and-zoom jet. It accelerates faster than every Axis prop and holds energy in a dive better than anything Allied has until the M22 patch. The trade-off is exactly the same as every other jet: it does not turn well. If a Spitfire or a P-51 gets on your six in a flat turn, you lose the exchange.
In practice the ME 262 is the safest Axis jet for new pilots who want to learn the jet meta. The acceleration is forgiving, the roll rate is high enough to dodge return fire from props, and the default gun convergence is set up for 400 to 600 meter engagements. If you keep the fight at energy and never accept a flat turn, the ME 262 will win consistently.
If you want a quick history reference, the Plane tier list ranks the ME 262 in A-tier for v3.5.1, just below the new Axis apex jet, the Phantom. The Best starter plane guide does not cover jets, so start here once you have reached tier 4 unlocks.
How to unlock the ME 262
The ME 262 unlocks at level 30 for 150,000 credits. It is the most expensive Axis unlock between the FW 190 and the Phantom, so plan your credit sink around it.
The fastest unlock path is:
- Stay on the FW 190 until level 30. Do not waste credits on cosmetic upgrades — you will sell the FW the moment the ME 262 unlocks.
- Run the How to earn gold fast farming routes from level 20 onward so you have the 150,000 credits banked before you hit the unlock level.
- Redeem every active code on the Active codes page the day you hit level 30. The codes drop credit boosts that stack with your saved credits.
- Buy the ME 262 the second you unlock it. The cost does not decrease over time, but the credit boosts only stack on the day you buy.
If you are below level 20, see the How to unlock planes page for the full ladder. The Getting started guide walks new pilots through the first five levels.
Upgrade order for the ME 262
The ME 262 has four upgrade slots: engine, guns, airframe, and wings. The optimal order for the ME 262 is different from a prop fighter:
- Engine — the ME 262 lives and dies on acceleration. Max engine first.
- Guns — the default MK 108 cannons are accurate at range but underpowered. Max guns second so your bursts actually threaten late-game jets.
- Airframe — extra HP lets you survive the longer engagements you take as a boom-and-zoom pilot.
- Wings — wings do almost nothing for the ME 262. Skip them until you have the rest of the plane maxed and only then max wings as a vanity upgrade.
Each upgrade costs between 18,000 and 35,000 credits. Plan on saving an extra 100,000 credits on top of the unlock cost if you want to fly the ME 262 fully maxed.
How to fly the ME 262
The ME 262 rewards boom-and-zoom flying. That means you dive on enemies, fire a burst, and extend away before they can turn on you. You never, ever try to turn with a turn fighter in an ME 262.
The standard ME 262 engagement loop is:
- Find a target that is flying level or turning gently below you.
- Roll inverted, pull the nose down to build energy, and roll back upright as you close range.
- Fire a single burst between 400 and 600 meters. The default convergence is set for this window.
- Extend away in the dive, do not pull up into a turn. Repeat the pass until the target is dead or the fight has separated.
The most common ME 262 mistake is pulling up after the burst. As soon as you pull up you bleed all your energy, and a turn fighter on your six will eat you. The How to fly guide covers the same idea in more detail; the Turn vs energy fighting page explains when each style works.
How to fight the Gloster Meteor
The Gloster Meteor is the Allied jet you will see most often in mixed lobbies. The two jets are almost mirror matches in speed and energy retention. The ME 262 has a small advantage in acceleration off the deck, while the Meteor has a small advantage in roll rate. In a straight engagement the pilot who wins is the one who keeps the fight vertical.
The way to win an ME 262 versus Meteor fight is to drag the engagement into a vertical turning fight below 2,000 meters, where the Meteor’s high-speed handling falls off the same way the ME 262’s does. The opening pass matters more than the rest of the fight. If you bounce a Meteor from above with energy, you have a real chance. If you let a Meteor set the engagement altitude, the Meteor wins the rate fight and you bleed energy.
For the Allied mirror, see the Gloster Meteor guide. For the Axis apex jet that comes after, see the Phantom jet guide.
Best events to farm in the ME 262
The ME 262 is the best Axis credit farmer in the game for two reasons. First, it kills bots faster than any prop. Second, it survives long enough to reach the bonus-tier kill thresholds.
The best event rotation for the ME 262 is:
- Bomber Run — you can reach the bombers before any prop and one-clip them with the upgraded cannons.
- Meteor Hunt — the ME 262 is the optimal pick here against Allied jets that over-commit on the deck.
- King of the Hill — the ME 262’s acceleration lets you reset between waves faster than any other Axis jet.
For the full event rotation, see the Event schedule page. The Active codes page lists the credit-boost codes that stack with event payouts.
How to fight boss planes
The ME 262 has just enough burst damage to solo the late-game boss planes if you set up the engagement correctly. The trick is to fly the opening pass at 500 meters, dump a full burst into the boss wing roots, and extend away before the wing-mounted gunners converge on you. Pair this with the How to shoot down bosses target-priority rules, and you can take down a B-17 or a Ta-152 in two passes without dying.
The most common ME 262 boss mistake is staying inside the gunner envelope after the burst. Boss gunners track best between 200 and 400 meters; the ME 262 has to extend away before the gunners lock in. As soon as you have fired, point the nose down, build energy, and reset for another pass.
When to switch off the ME 262
Switch off the ME 262 the moment you unlock the Phantom. The Phantom is the new Axis apex jet and dominates every Axis jet role except pure turn fighting. If you play bomber-hunter, the Phantom out-DPS you. If you play dogfight, the Phantom out-turns you up to 600 km/h and out-runs you above that.
The ME 262 remains the second-best Axis jet and the safest jet for new pilots. Keep it upgraded as your backup until you have the Phantom maxed.
For the full unlock ladder, see the How to unlock planes guide. For which jet to switch to once you have credits, see the Plane tier list.
Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers to the most common questions.
Is the ME 262 still meta in v3.5.1?
It is A-tier, not S-tier. The Phantom (new in v3.5.1) is the new Axis apex jet. The ME 262 is still the second-best Axis jet and the safest for new pilots who want to learn boom-and-zoom.
Should I max the ME 262 before buying the Phantom?
No. Save credits for the Phantom unlock first (200,000 credits). The ME 262's max-upgrade bonus is small compared to the Phantom's raw power increase.
What is the best Axis plane to fight a Gloster Meteor with?
The ME 262 in v3.5.1. Drag the fight into a vertical turning fight below 2,000 meters where both jets lose high-speed handling, and bounce the Meteor from above with energy.
